[edit] 1 Inaugural Steeple BR meeting.
[edit] 1.1 Introductions
[edit] 1.1.1 Welcome and introduction to the project (Bjoern, 5 mins)
Overarching goals:
- maximum reach
- change management in HE
Maximum reach: how do we reach the largest number of institutions and a tangible change in those institutions? What tangible change are we looking for specifically?
http://www.steeple.org.uk/wiki/BR/Proposal

[edit] 1.1.3 Introduction to Steeple
What is steeple? Enterprise level working, but with an emphasis on simplifying and streamlining the workflows.
Main web pages
- http://steeple.oucs.ox.ac.uk - Front page - has the Steeple podcasts from confs/workshops
- http://steeple.org.uk/ - main place for project activity - best to search via keyword... lots of documents/thoughts. 2 excellent guides - Handbook on Podcasting (70pages), Processes and Policy handbook. All release under creative commons so they can be photocopied. Tons of presentations,pdfs,.ppts. An example of aggregation across institutions.
[edit] 1.2 What we planned ... (Bjoern, 5mins)
[edit] 1.2.1 Events
- Discussion of topics for monthly webinars
- Oxford 7th October unconference - This is a one day get together based at Oxford Computing Services mainly for the ELTAC project and Steeple. Focus on copyright/legal/RSS/Open Content. Friends of Steeple welcome... Max 20ish people.
- Email steeple@oucs.ox.ac.uk if you are interested in attending please. We do need to put names on seats - thanks!
Thoughts on first workshop (tentative suggestion for date/location is week 23rd November in Nottingham) near to the dates for another conference (25th Nov) at Nottingham.
The idea of running the workshop back to back with the Open Learning Conference (http://unow.nottingham.ac.uk/olc.aspx) seemed like a good idea, so people can kill two birds with one stone. So we'll have the first workshop in that week. Mark the dates in your diary, details to follow!
Monthly webinars: topics.
- Steeple Update
- RSS & iTunesU rss
- Podcast library function in PCP2
- http://unow.nottingham.ac.uk/olc.aspx
[edit] 1.2.2 Site visits
Site visits are available, just let us know when you want to talk. Bjoern will catch up with Steeple-BR partners in turn to chat about the way forward.
[edit] 1.2.3 Demo environment
A demo environment is planned to get set up. See discussion below.
[edit] 1.3 General discussion
Probably about ~ 10 - 15 mins per topic! If we run out of time, it'll spill over into the next meeting.
[edit] 1.3.1 What do you want to get out of the project?
Discussion of what you would like to get out of the project (original proposal here http://www.steeple.org.uk/wiki/BR/Proposal )
What are the most important issues?
[edit] 1.3.1.1 FAQ
Question: Within the iTunes U CMS, does anyone know a way of graphically representing the Latest or 'Featured' podcasts without duplicating data that can also be found elsewhere in a Category?
-> An FAQ on the Steeple website (incl audio/video faq) would be useful, and PPP may be able to input where appropriate.
Finding out about good practices - in the use of materials. What works best?
Created page faq.
[edit] 1.3.1.2 Organsational training
What about organisational training? How can Steeple-BR help with organisational training?
[edit] 1.3.1.3 Encoding
How can we help with relieving people from the hassle of encoding.
[edit] 1.3.1.4 Gather feedback
Feedback for the Steeple Project. Another role for Steeple-BR could be to get feedback on the Steeple project from non-Steeple institutions. Areas of information that are lacking, need enhancement?
[edit] 1.3.2 What does the demo environment need to do?
- what do people want to see? How do we run this as a community?
- Where do the servers go?
- Needs to be carefully managed - the key here is what will meet the T&Cs of the hosting arrangement. Having them in a sandboxed network environment may help, but may be also problematic.
- Needs to be of value to members - how much value would the community get from some screencasts showing PcP setup/in use?
- Needs to be run in conjunction with pedagogical expertise, in context of workshops.
[edit] 1.3.3 Governance and relations with other projects
- governance/steering
- relation with PPP (next PPP steering group meeting: to be decided. Will let everyone know.)
- relation with ELTAC
- relation with opencast
Groups that Steeple-BR will liaise with: PPP/DIVERSE/ELTAC-BR at a national level, opencast at an international level
Opencast: -> CM: Propose that we position ourselves as part of the Opencast community, but that we appear as distinct project in our own right. We're not competing with anyone, but are handling UK specific issues and happy to share our experiences and learn from others.
What is PPP? It's a special interest group, lots of people involved, active education developers and learning technolgists. access to lots of expertise. 'exploring the new territory of podcasting. During events, develop areas where there are question! http://podcastingforpp.pbworks.com/
PPP: relation with PPP (next PPP steering group meeting: to be decided. Will let everyone know.)
Eltac: Bjoern is talking with Juliet, to see how ELTAC-BR and Steeple-BR can work together.
[edit] 1.3.4 What are the opportunities for collaboration?
- code share (people are building a lot of code from scratch - can we pull together and share)
- the Syndication book ("How do I make the right feeds for iTunesu?")
- What can you offer to the project?
Not enough time - discuss at next meeting.
[edit] 1.4 house keeping
When do we meet next? How often do we meet?
~ 2 weeks in the long run, but every week initially.
What collaboration tools do you want? (Elluminate, wiki, mailing list, facebook, second life, ...)
- Elluminate would work well for webinars. Easy to record, interactive tools. However, simulatneous speakers limited to 6, and some people couldn't connect due to java issues.
- CM: Propose Skype for shared Audio experience. Etherpad is working well for documents, but I do wonder how we might share images/slides.
Etherpad was very useful, and overall easy to access for people.
