[edit] 1 Appendix 3: Technical advice /specifications
It’s critical for any project that encoding standards are considered from the outset, though this is usually a relatively simple process as most encoding tools have a number of presets to work from as a starting point. Once settings have been optimised for the project it’s key to get agreement from the interested parties or strategy body.
At the Open University our main delivery tool for student learning materials is our VLE (Virtual Learning Environment), a learning tool which has been developed by Moodle. The OU has bought into and teamed-up with Moodle and developed the set of open source applications for its own use.
The OU’s VLE can support audio and video delivery to the student via a Flash player. We use basic MP3 files for the audio content and Flash for the video delivery. These are currently downloaded only. The RSS tools in the VLE are still fairly basic so we haven’t been supporting podcasting in its true sense. Podcasts has been delivered to students via course web site or via other supporting tools such as iTunes U.
The agreed OU Flash file standards are below.
